Connie Monks Discusses Former Stores

Connie Monks Discusses Former 4 Stores on RVR

Note: Until the mid 1950s, there were 4 stores on RVR directly across from the Coppertree Mall. The Oakland Military Academy was located on the site of the Coppertree Mall until 1963 when it was demolished. Those stores were moved to what is now Elm Street in the 1950s.

Constance Williams Monks Oh boy you bring the memories flowing. To the left was Mr. Proskeys antique store. Next was Vic the barber and the the Green Spot luncheonette. The one farthest to the right was a bunch of things. In the forties my brother Bert had a bike shop. He was a kid but rented and repaired bikes. In the summer our population tripled with all the beach areas. It was also the Post Office. Next was the gas station where the Oakland Ambulance was housed at night. Next was the building that was moved back and is a beauty parlor. I can go on and on.

Constance Williams Monks Ok that building was picked up and moved sideways and created Elm Street. It became one way because not enough land for two way st. Looks to me like part was left off. It is where Dr. Weiss’s office is. Sorry Kevin it is lunch time. Later

Constance Williams Monks In “my” day the Megnins lived there. Later my Mom and Marie Sarcka bought it and started an antique store plus rented a few rooms to DuPont workers. My Mom died in 1948 and my Dadsold it to Yoemans.

Kevin Heffernan Constance Williams Monks….I think that it was originally build by Earnest McNomee who had his store across the street.

Constance Williams Monks Now you go beyond my recollections although I knew Ernie who with his wife had the Great Eastern store. Lived in the back of the storee and rented the rest.

Sue Proskey March from an old post, my understanding is that this is my grandmother, Ethel Proskey’s, antique shop.

Kevin Heffernan Those stores were approximately where Oakland Drugs is now. During the late 1950s or early 1960s, the entire building was moved to the right side of what is/was the Sears shopping center on RVR. Originally there were 4 stores but now there are 3. However, there are 4 back doors on the current building.
